About Pasadena

Located at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains, Pasadena is 11 miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles, off the 210 and 110 freeways or by the Metro Gold Line.

Pasadena is alive with remarkable art collections, architecture, literature, and entertainment. Within Pasadena’s 1.5 mile downtown core, you’ll find most retail areas, cobblestone courtyards, sidewalk bistros, and nightlife within three alluring shopping and entertainment districts; Old Pasadena, the Playhouse District, and South Lake Avenue. Pasadena is an invitingly walkable community, but it also features a smart, streamlined transit system. Shuttles, buses, and light rail can take you anywhere in the city and to landmarks in the greater Los Angeles area.

Pasadena ARTS Bus

Norton Simon Museum of Art

The Norton Simon Museum has what is known around the world as one of the most remarkable private art collections ever assembled. Over a 30-year period, industrialist Norton Simon (1907-1993) amassed an astonishing collection of European art from the Renaissance to the 20th century, and a magnificent collection of South and Southeast Asian art spanning 2,000 years. Highlights on view include masterpieces by Raphael, Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Monet, Cézanne, Degas and Picasso.
The Museum’s beautiful and serene garden evokes Monet’s Giverny and holds a spectacular collection of 20th-century sculpture, with works by Maillol, Hepworth, Rodin and Moore.

Founded in 1924 as the Pasadena Historical Society, Pasadena Museum of History operates the only Museum and Research Library devoted solely to preserving and educating the public about the history of Pasadena and the west San Gabriel Valley.

Pacific Asia Museum

Established in 1971, the museum is one of only four U.S. institutions dedicated to the arts and culture of Asia and the Pacific Islands, serving the city of Los Angeles and the Greater Southern California region. The museum’s mission is to further intercultural understanding through the arts of Asia and the Pacific Islands.

Meiji: Japan Rediscovered explores the vibrant connection between Japan and the West during the Meiji period (1868-1912). Meiji is one of the most dynamic eras in Japanese political and cultural history, as Japanese artists in all fields rediscovered and re-imagined their own history in response to the “opening” of the country to Europe and America.

The Pasadena Museum of California Art (PMCA) is dedicated to the exhibition of California art, architecture, and design from 1850 to the present. Informed by the state’s rich mixture of cultures and inspired by its impressive geography, California art has long been defined by a spirit of freedom and experimentation. PMCA exhibitions and educational programs explore the cultural dynamics and influences unique to California that have shaped and defined art in all media.

The Huntington Library and Botanical Gardens
In 1903 Henry Huntington purchased the San Marino Ranch, a working ranch with citrus groves, nut and fruit orchards, alfalfa crops, a small herd of cows, and poultry. His superintendent, William Hertrich, was instrumental in developing the various plant collections that comprise the foundation of the botanical gardens. The property—originally nearly 600 acres—today covers 207 acres, of which approximately 120 are landscaped and open to visitors. More than 14,000 different varieties of plants are showcased in more than a dozen principal garden areas. Forty gardeners, a curatorial staff of seven, and more than 100 volunteers maintain the botanical collections, provide interpretive programs for visitors, and propagate plants for special sales.

Free tours of the gardens are available with general admission or membership. Tours are offered Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday between noon and 2 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday between 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. 1151 Oxford Road, San Marino, CA. For more information call: 626-405-2100
