Finding Solid Ground*
Professor Jeremy Hunter, Ph.D.
At this interactive workshop, Professor Hunter (Drucker School of Management) will engage us in a conversation about the internal dynamics of leadership – productively moving forward in times of stress, how to keep from acting on instinctual survival reactions, how to engage with diverse and conflicting points of view, and how to face problems with an open mind. By the end of the workshop participants will have a better understanding of:
- the skills to help gain inner balance, perspective and calm
- the relationship between stress and productivity
- how the human brain functions, how those functions can intentionally undermine effectiveness, and what to do about it
*Registration limited to 48 attendees.
Getting to WIN! How to Effectively Speak to Those in Power—in Your City, Your State, Your Nation*
Jan Sanders & Deborah Doyle

We’ll cover the planning, the tips, the right terminology, the best approach, and the most effective way to sell your ideas, promote your library, and gain the support of your electeds. This hands-on approach is perfect for those who have never done any advocacy work as well as for those seasoned presenters who just want to hone their skills. Plenty of conversation, work sheets, and role playing make this an experience you can count on.
*Registration limited to 75 attendees.

Strategic Reality Check*
George Needham & Joan Frye Williams
Times change and plans need to change with them. If your library has experienced a significant budget, staffing, or management upheaval, you should probably take a fresh look at your strategy. The Strategic Reality Check is a process developed by consultants Joan Frye Williams and George Needham to assist libraries in moving quickly to revise and update their strategic plans, or to create entirely new plans as needed. This course will prepare you to conduct a straightforward, pragmatic process that uses existing data and simple decision tools to create a strategic plan that is community-focused, timely, and flexible.
*Registration limited to 32 attendees.
Life Long Eureka Leadership: Reinventing Yourself And Your Library*
John Shannon & Becky Schreiber
In the rapidly changing environmental landscape, libraries need to harness the power of individual staff members to generate collective action, positioning libraries as vital to the health of our communities. The recession-driven atmosphere presents opportunities to let go of old models and adopt new practices to keep our libraries relevant for the future. This is a workshop for those who want to enhance the contribution of work throughout their career and operate collaboratively with others doing the same. We will explore two conceptual models at the crossroads of personal mastery and organizational effectiveness. In age specific groups, you will explore the values, motivations, and skills of the current stage of your career, and talk with colleagues who are navigating their way through similar life experiences. We will discover together what each stage of life has to offer in four areas of organizational vitality – immediate systems improvement, creating an organizational culture for the future, current customer responsiveness, and vision alignment with community goals.
*Registration limited to 32 attendees.

The Future: Frankenbooks, Social Collaboration and Learning on Steroids
Stephen Abram
The future, depending on your point of view and attitude, can be viewed as exciting or scary - or maybe both, like a rollercoaster! Do e-books change everything? Does format trump reading? We can acknowledge that the future won't be the same as the past - not by a long shot. What are the opportunities for us and what enhancements might we expect? Is this the final straw for libraries or the biggest opportunity for us since the advent of the web? Are libraries going to be even more open and boundary-less? Are the newest social technologies for the web a great opportunity for social institutions like libraries, schools, universities and governments? Or are we entering a DIY search and answer world? Which new 'ways' are worth investigating to set the library's mandate and philosophies?
Stephen Abram is a veteran library watcher, strategic technologist and library futurist. For the SJSU SLIS CLA lecture he will share his perspectives on these issues, challenges, and opportunities.
